Mazda 2: Clock Spring

CLOCK SPRING REMOVAL/INSTALLATION

1. Switch the ignition to off.

2. Disconnect the negative battery cable and wait for 1 min or more.

3. Remove the following parts:

  1. Driver-side air bag module (See DRIVER-SIDE AIR BAG MODULE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION).
  2. Steering wheel (See STEERING WHEEL AND COLUMN REMOVAL/INSTALLATION).
  3. Column cover (See COLUMN COVER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION).

4. Disconnect the clock spring connector.

5. Press and detach the tab of the clock spring in the direction of the arrow of the clock spring in the position shown in the figure.

6. Insert a flathead screwdriver into the service hole of the combination switch in the position shown in the figure, and detach the tab of the clock spring.

7. Remove the clock spring.

8. Install in the reverse order of removal.

CAUTION:

9. Perform the clock spring adjustment. (See CLOCK SPRING ADJUSTMENT).

10. Switch the ignition to ON.

11. Verify that the air bag system warning light illuminates for approx. 6 s and goes out.

CLOCK SPRING ADJUSTMENT

NOTE:

1. Set the front tires straight-ahead.

CAUTION:

2. Turn the clock spring clockwise until it stops.

3. From the stopped position, turn the clock spring counterclockwise 2 1/2 turns.

4. Align the marks.

CLOCK SPRING INSPECTION

1. Switch the ignition to off.

2. Disconnect the negative battery cable and wait for 1 min or more.

3. Remove the following parts:

  1. Driver-side air bag module (See DRIVER-SIDE AIR BAG MODULE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION).
  2. Steering wheel (See STEERING WHEEL AND COLUMN REMOVAL/INSTALLATION).
  3. Column cover (See COLUMN COVER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION).
  4. Clock spring (See CLOCK SPRING REMOVAL/INSTALLATION).

4. Verify that the continuity is as indicated in the table.
